Visit by Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister for Education,
to China Nanjing Xing Zhi Primary School, 9 January 2006
Interview by Nanjing TV Station
to China Nanjing Xing Zhi Primary School, 9 January 2006
Interview by Nanjing TV Station
Q: What is your impression of Xing Zhi Primary School?
A: I have the impression of a very vibrant school, where the children are eager to learn. They clearly enjoy what they are doing.
A: I have the impression of a very vibrant school, where the children are eager to learn. They clearly enjoy what they are doing.
Q: What is the difference between the China students and Singapore students?
A: Actually children all over the world are not the same. The question is how you nurture them. And I think what is very impressive about this school is that they have a very strong focus on nurturing students rather than forcing them to achieve results quickly.
Q: Since there was a batch of 200 students that came in 2005, what are the things that the Singapore students can learn from the China students that Singapore’s education system cannot provide?
A: I think the first thing to learn about is when you meet people from other countries, in this case the school is in a rural area, is that you do not need to have very much in order to learn by yourself. You do not need a lot of equipment; you do not need to come from a rich family. Learning is much of an individual desire.
Q: After this visit, what will be the things that interest you the most in terms of the education here?
A: Well, the reason why I chose to visit this school is that the principal Mr Yang has been to Singapore twice and he has given us very interesting views on education. And these views are very similar to what we are seeking to implement into Singapore education system. That is the focus on giving children the space to grow and develop their own interest and the focus on making sure that the children are happy in their learning rather than trying to achieve results at a very early age. We are trying to move away from early assessment of children in primary schools towards allowing each of them to discover something that they enjoy doing to help them learn in the process. As the principal himself have said, teachers can learn from farmers. If the farmer wants the plant to grow, he will not pull it out by the roots in order that it grows taller. The strongest and tallest plants will eventually be those that grow naturally. In Singapore we have a principle which we call “teach less, learn more”. Mr Yang Rui Qing has been practicing this for many years in this school.
Thank You.
